Part IV: Education and Outreach

The impacts of climate change are unfolding now, and since the global community has only recently begun to seriously acknowledge the problem, there will be an ongoing need for new efforts and approaches in dealing with it. Every institution of higher learning can address climate change by preparing today’s young people to meet the crisis directly. Knowledge about human influences on the Earth system acquired in universities can help future generations of engaged citizens take personal actions to confront global warming. UCI will train the world’s best climate scientists, chemists, biologists and engineers, who will come up with ways to reorganize our world to function without the need for fossil fuels. The role of academics in communicating their research findings to the public will also be of great importance, so outreach through speaking, writing, media appearances and thought leadership will be a vital part of their work.
